Event

Summary

This mock trial event will be hosted by IOSH Fire Risk Management Group and presented by the law firm Mishcon De Reya.

As a director, senior manager or supervisor, your task is to make sure that not only are you compliant with your legal duties in respect of health and safety/fire safety, but that you are doing what is reasonable to ensure that you assist the organisation to be compliant with its overarching corporate obligations. Despite best intentions, things can still go wrong. This mock trial aims to explain what can happen when things do go wrong and a person is injured as a result of a fire incident.

During this interactive trial, the audience will play the jury and after listening to the witness evidence and the arguments presented by the prosecution and defence lawyers, they will decide whether the defendant organisation is guilty or not guilty. The event will close with a discussion of the verdict and its implications.

There will be the opportunity for the jury members to question the witnesses and fully immerse themselves in the courtroom experience before deciding whether the defendant company has breached their fire safety obligations, as well as assisting the Judge with the sentencing process, if applicable. This lively and informative session will provide attendees with an understanding of both the legal process and how a defendant should or should not respond in court in respect of a fire safety prosecution. This promises to be an event not to be missed!
