IOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health Leadership and Management

Eligibility

This qualification is suitable if you manage occupational safety and health (OSH) policy, procedures and practice, or you're a member of a senior leadership team or report directly to senior leaders.

You must be aged 19 or above and:

  • have a Level 3 OSH qualification or a minimum of two years' relevant OSH experience
  • meet our English language criteria, which you can review during the sign-up process.

You also need to be an IOSH member (all membership grades qualify). You can apply to study for the Level 6 Diploma if you're not yet a member. You will need to join as a member before your course starts.

You'll learn the skills and knowledge needed to lead on the development of health, safety and wellbeing within workplaces. The focus is on the application of best practice in occupational safety and health to improve business performance.

The IOSH Level 6 Diploma consists of three units.

    The aim of the unit is to enable you to demonstrate advanced understanding of OSH legal frameworks and management principles. This includes the application, development, appraisal, and implications of different approaches in a business.

    • OSH legal frameworks around the world
    • Key components of OSH risk management
    • Approaches to OSH incident management
    • Integrating OSH risk into organisational risk processes

    The aim of this unit is to enable you to critically appraise OSH performance within an organisation. You will learn how internal and external factors can influence OSH decision making and approach, while contributing to wider business strategy. You will develop recommendations for improving and implementing organisation-wide OSH practices and culture.

    • Contribution of OSH activities to an organisation’s value chain
    • Implications of external factors and organisation change on an organisation’s approach to OSH
    • Contribution of OSH to sustainability
    • Organisation wide approach to OSH

    The aim of this unit is to enable you to demonstrate understanding and application of leadership skills to influence, challenge and drive change within OSH in an organisation. You will critically review the effectiveness of your own capability and performance to fulfil the OSH leadership role. You will also identify areas for continuing professional development (CPD).

    • Leading and influencing other to achieve results
    • Embedding an organisation wide approach to OSH
    • Reviewing own OSH leadership and competence

How you are assessed

You'll be assessed through three assignments that include a combination of reports and presentations. Tasks are based on your current workplace. This means you and your employer will benefit from your work on the Diploma straight away.

If you don't have a current workplace, it may be possible to base these tasks on a volunteer role or place of study, such as a college or university. Please talk to your study centre to find out more.

The Diploma offers a route to IOSH Certified membership. This gives you access to support, guidance and resources to continue developing your career. 

Successful completion of the Diploma also means you can become a member of the Institute of Leadership at a discounted rate. Employers will know that you have the leadership skills they need.

We approve study centres to deliver this qualification. Each study centre decides how they deliver the qualification, how much it costs and start dates. There's options for online study from anywhere in the world.
