Strategic Health and Safety - How to positively challenge and support your Board

Overview

It’s now recognised that to be effective, OSH professionals need to be able to influence strategically – as well as advise technically. The new IOSH Competency Framework reflects this.

There’s lots of great technical OSH training available. But, it’s harder to find training that provides the knowledge, confidence and softer skills so that OSH professionals can strategically challenge and influence their boards.

To help close this gap, this CPD course gives delegates more confidence in how to develop their strategic OSH relationship with their board and directors. It’s suitable for both newer and more experienced professionals, and looks at OSH much more through the eyes of board members. The focus is on what effective boards should be doing, and how OSH can be made a much more integrated part of this.

The course is all about stretching thinking in this area. It provides key insights into how good corporate governance is developing, and the strategic OSH context. It explores how to bring these together at board level. And, through positive challenge and support, how to achieve ‘good governance in health and safety’.

The approach is interactive, using discussion and exercises to help delegates develop their own thinking and strategic skills. Comprehensive course notes are provided, with PowerPoint kept to a minimum, enabling delegates to focus on the discussions.

This one day virtual course was previously the Board Masterclass for OSH Professionals, which has always been very well received.

Learning outcomes

To develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to discuss, challenge and support OSH at board level. Delegates will be able to:

  • Make the links between OSH and good corporate governance
  • Outline key factors influencing the strategic OSH context and how these can be used to engage and influence boards
  • Describe what a best practice framework for good practice in corporate OSH governance looks like
  • Identify how to interact with the board through risk management, board OSH information, and audit and assurance processes
  • Use an effective board annual OSH Review to help pull together key elements of good corporate OSH governance
