The impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has been sudden and wide-reaching.  Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected globally and there is uncertainty around what’s going to happen next.  

As your professional membership body, IOSH is fully committed to helping you navigate through these difficult times, where you may be experiencing new work pressures, financial hardship or anxiety about what the future holds for your loved ones and your livelihoods.

So, we understand how crucial it is that we fully support you throughout this pandemic and the recovery period beyond.


FAQs

How can IOSH help me if I’m furloughed and worried about my job security or looking for a job?

We recently launched our Career Hub which is packed with tools and resources to support job seekers through the application process. It also has a huge library of e-learning resources to help you develop your business skills and get ahead of the competition. And of course, there is also IOSH jobs.


Who do I contact if I have questions about my IOSH Membership?

Ensuring you are supported remains a key priority for IOSH. Although the vast majority of our team are now home-based, we have worked hard to minimise the impact to our members and as such, our Customer Service Centre will offer the same level of advice and support and remain open during our usual hours:

What are my membership subscription payment options if I’ve been affected by the coronavirus?

If you’ve been adversely affected by the coronavirus, our Customer Service Centre will be able to discuss the different payment options available to you.  Depending on your situation, you might be eligible for one of our concessionary rates

Anyone experiencing difficulty paying their membership fees should contact our Customer Service Centre directly on +44 (0)116 257 3198 or at CSC@iosh.com to discuss individual circumstances or find out what extra support we can offer.  The sooner you get in touch, the sooner we can help you.


How am I being supported by IOSH during this time?

IOSH is committed to supporting our members’ professional development in the best way possible, and this will remain the case throughout the duration of the coronavirus outbreak.

As an IOSH member, you will continue to have access to the best advice, guidance and thought leadership, as your role develops in line with the evolution of the workplace and your personal situation.

All member benefits (https://www.iosh.com/membership/about-membership/why-join-us/) will remain in place and we are working hard to further improve this package and offer even more value to our members.

Please ensure that you keep up to date with all communications from IOSH, as we will be using these channels to release more information as soon as we can.


Has the IOSH health and safety helpline been affected?

As part of your membership, you can access advice on occupational safety and health and employment law through the IOSH health and safety helpline.  The helpline has been unaffected and is available from 08:00 – 18:00 GMT.  More information on the helpline, including how to access support, can be found at www.iosh.com/resources-and-research/health-and-safety-helpline


I no longer have access to my work address – can I still receive IOSH Magazine and any other IOSH mail whilst I am at home?

We recommend that you update your personal details anytime there is a change in circumstance, and the coronavirus outbreak is no exception.

We wouldn’t want you to miss out on future editions of IOSH Magazine, so if you currently have this delivered to your work address, please be sure to update your preferences by emailing our Customer Service Centre at CSC@iosh.com 


How can I maintain my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record now that I’m remote working/working from home and no longer able to attend face-to-face training sessions?

Face-to-face training or networking isn’t the only type of learning activity that counts towards your CPD.  If you’re remote working, any of the following activities can still provide valuable CPD learning activities, even if they’re carried out virtually rather than in person:

Work-based learning

  • On the job training
  • Work shadowing
  • Secondment
  • Job rotation
  • Coaching
  • Writing reports
  • Projects out of scope of current role
  • Peer review of own work
  • Discussions with colleagues

Professional activities

  • Mentoring (either as mentee/mentor) – see IOSH Mentoring for more details
  • Delivering presentations
  • Sitting on professional committees/panels
  • Writing/authoring
  • Lecturing/teaching (non-role)
  • Job promotion
  • Reading professional journals

Other types of learning activity can also count towards your CPD:

Formal learning (including participation in activities leading to academic/professional qualifications)

  • Qualifications (even if this is now being delivered virtually)
  • E-learning (assessed)
  • E-learning (not assessed), for example webinars [can we link to Events page if we’ve got webinars up and running there?]
  • Writing articles or papers

Self-directed learning (where you take initiative in identifying your learning needs)

  • General reading – the newly-refreshed IOSH Magazine is a great place to start ioshmagazine.com
  • Internet research
  • Informal networking, for example on social media

All of the activities outlined above, give you an opportunity to reflect and consider how you would apply the learning to your role.

I’m a Graduate Member – can I still work towards becoming Chartered?

Absolutely.  If you find that working from home is giving you extra time as you no longer face the daily commute to work, this is the perfect could present a good opportunity to work on your professional development and progress to becoming a Chartered Member.  If you’d like to find out more about the assessment process for Chartered Membership, Initial Professional Development (IPD), please contact to our Professional Development team on +44 (0)116 257 3200 or at Professional.Development@iosh.com and they will be able to support you with this.  You can also go to www.iosh.com/membership/professional-development/ipd for more information.

For anyone already enrolled onto the IPD process, our IPD support and service is still running.  The IPD online platform is still available to use and we’re using Zoom video conferencing technology to hold virtual Peer Review Interviews.  The Professional Development team would be happy to answer any questions you might have on this.


I’m a Student Member – is there any additional support I can access?

We know these are unsettling times, particularly if your place of study has closed too. However, we know that your tutors are working extremely hard to ensure your studies can continue, your assessments can still take place, and ultimately you can successfully complete your qualifications.

Here at IOSH we want to ensure you can communicate with others facing similar challenges. This is why, as part of the Future Leaders Community, you’re able to network with other early career professionals too. Be sure to=look at the resources available, including the discussion forum.

All of your Student Member benefits remain unaffected so that you can take full advantage of them. Included here is the IOSH Career Hub, helping you to plan and manage your career goals, with practical career development and job-hunting tips and advice to prepare you for your dream OSH role. Included in the resources on there is a section looking at how you can develop resilience – potentially very useful during this unsettling time. To log into the Career Hub you can get access through MyIOSH.

On top of the existing benefits, we are working hard to launch more for you, specifically designed to support you during this difficult time. 


Are there any alternatives being offered to replace face-to-face IOSH events and branch meetings?

We have postponed all of our face to face IOSH events and branch meetings due to the developing situation with COVID-19 (coronavirus) in accordance with government and health authorities’ advice from around the world.  However, we understand how a sense of community is vital at this time of international crisis and we want to fully support our members and help them to share challenges and advice.  As the world is having to quickly adapt to new ways of working and connecting with each other, we are supporting our global network of regional branches and our sector groups to use technology to run virtual events and webinars and we are exploring ways to host virtual drop-ins and hang outs.

What advice can IOSH give me about Covid-19?

IOSH has created a website to provide information on the coronavirus. On it you will have the facts explained and find advice on what to think about. You can access this information by visiting the coronavirus hub. Further information can be found in our Connect and IOSH magazine publications. We are working hard to keep these sources of information current with regular updates.
