Decisions are made by those who turn up

As we approach the annual general meeting (AGM), our President-Elect Kelly Nicoll shares a lesson we can learn from a fictional president.

I’m reminded of a quote popularised in TV show The West Wing: “Decisions are made by those who show up.” Creator Aaron Sorkin was, of course, referring to the importance of voting in the US presidential election. I’m talking about ensuring that you have your voice, and your vote, heard in IOSH’s upcoming AGM.

Why?

Well, because your vote matters. Your vote is your voice and your participation in our decision-making. Voting is a catalyst for engagement and enables your institution to hear what your thoughts and feelings are with the direction proposed.

Previously, members have decided on changes to the governance structure and, most recently, changes to the membership grades. This have influenced the direction of IOSH and how we have got to where we are today.

This time around, members get to vote on two key pieces, which both require changes to our Byelaws. Firstly, changes to the Council and Presidential team structure to become more agile, responsive and provide a future-ready approach to our governance structure.

The second, around networks, branches and groups, enabling IOSH to become more flexible and representative of all members’ needs.

We have also incorporated a full review of the Byelaws through an equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) lens to be fully inclusive to all.

This is your chance to have your say.

Many people don’t bother voting because they believe their vote doesn’t matter. The reality is, as we've learnt in recent years in plenty of political votes, some of these things are decided by just a handful of votes.

Job role

Every vote counts. Every single one.

If you’re a Corporate Member – that is a Chartered Member or Fellow – you have a vote. You have a say in how IOSH moves forward. It’s not just a right, it’s an honour and privilege that can be a powerful tool for change.

And even if you're not yet a Corporate Member, you can still get involved. You have an opportunity to submit questions in advance of the AGM for them to be answered and encourage the Chartered Members and Fellows you know to vote.

However you want to vote, whether you agree with the proposed changes or not, your vote is essential. Decisions may be made that you disagree with, and without your vote, you don’t get a say.

Decisions are made by those who turn up.

So, turn up and vote.

Our online AGM takes place on 13 November starting at 13:00 GMT. All members can attend and speak (virtually) at the meeting.
