From international, national and regional media to sectoral press, communications and media at IOSH promotes the institution, its members and the safety and health profession to a wide audience. In 2018, we gained coverage in a wide array of media, from Sky News and MailOnline to BBC Radio Manchester and Construction News.
In the press
The team can work with you to promote your events and messages to appropriate audiences. Some of the things our branches and groups do could be of interest to journalists. We can help you identify stories with news value and proactively arrange contact with the media, using our ‘What’s Your Story?’ guide. Journalists often want to speak to the subject experts themselves. If required, we can also offer an IOSH spokesperson briefing so you know how to handle the interview (see Media interview brief example).
Other ways we can help you respond to relevant news include writing a letter to an editor or offering well-informed commentary online. Download our guide for writing this kind of content.
Speaking to the media
All media engagement must be carried out in collaboration with the IOSH Media team. If you’d like to talk to IOSH about sending a news release, please contact your Regional Manager (branches) or Relationship Manager (groups), who’ll put you in touch with the Media team.
If you speak to the media as an IOSH member, you represent the Institution as a whole. IOSH has developed a media training programme for its spokespeople. Those spokespeople include senior staff and members of the Presidential team. However, the Institution will also train branch or group members, chosen as spokespeople by their committees and IOSH’s Head of Communications and Media or Director of Communications.
From 12 August 2019, Redactive, an award-winning marketing and publishing agency, will manage and produce IOSH magazine, the magazine website and Health and Safety Jobs, as well as all magazine e-newsletters.
