Opportunity starts here

Your professional journey

The health and safety profession has never been more valued. Occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals have been recognised for their work keeping staff safe – and organisations afloat – during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, demand is growing for skilled professionals to drive change and influence OSH within organisations across the globe. It’s an exciting time for you to fulfil your potential and reach the highest standards – and your opportunity starts here!

How do you do this?

Let’s recap – in 2019, we launched a new competency framework, which outlines the technical, core and behavioural competencies you need to excel in your career as an OSH professional.

In November we’ll launch a new and enhanced version of Blueprint – an all-in-one package to self-assess, learn and record your continuing professional development (CPD) – to enhance your professional journey.

It will replace the current version of Blueprint, which only offers the first step of self-assessment.

Here’s what you can expect.

Self-assessment tool

Plot your own career path with our new self-assessment tool.

Available to members, the self-assessment tool is mapped to our competency framework and will identify your strengths and areas of improvement through a series of technical, core and behavioural competency questions.

Then, you’ll be provided with a personal development plan (PDP) to guide you on your way to success.

CPD resources

To support your learning and development, a new suite of resources, mapped to the competency framework, will be available. There will be a wide range of CPD resources for you to download, digest and refer to at any time.

Members will have access to all CPD resources at various levels. These include:

  • technical resources, written by IOSH’s health and safety experts
  • core and behavioural resources, provided by our specialist partners – bringing you the very best thinking in the field.

CPD record

Remaining CPD compliant is extremely important to safeguard your OSH professional status.

Within the new and enhanced Blueprint, you will find an area where you can record your CPD. You will easily be able to switch between the CPD resources and your CPD record to ensure you are recording your learning as you go along. It also directly links to your PDP, so you can track your progress.

We will publish further information about CPD when the updated version of Blueprint is launched. In the meantime you can find more information in our FAQs.

IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment

The new IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment provides you with up-to-date content on ethical considerations that affect organisations and the OSH profession in the widest sense.

The assessment will be available to all members in Blueprint, and it is a mandatory requirement for Chartered Members and Chartered Fellows. By passing the assessment, you’ll demonstrate that you are trained in the ethics of the OSH profession.

We will publish more information about ethical practice when the new and enhanced Blueprint is launched.

Keep an eye out for upcoming communications about the launch of the new and enhanced Blueprint via our website, your inbox, and our social media channels.

And remember, we already have fantastic tools and resources on offer to support your professional development, including:

Looking ahead to 2023

Soon after the launch of the updated Blueprint, we will be implementing IOSH’s new membership grades along with self-serve, personalised journeys for upgrading your membership. We want to fully support you on your professional journey to ensure that your membership grade reflects your level of professional competence.

In the meantime, we are providing you with the opportunity to self-assess and upskill, using the new and enhanced Blueprint, to identify and address any gaps in your competency by utilising our wide range of CPD resources.

We have planned detailed communications for all members to explain how/if their membership grade will change. These communications will start to roll out shortly, giving you plenty of preparation time, so please check your inboxes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email grades@iosh.com or check out our FAQs below.

Blueprint FAQs

When will the new and enhanced Blueprint launch?

The new and enhanced Blueprint will launch in November 2022. Details about what elements are included in Blueprint are at the top of this page. Keep an eye out for further communications on our website, social media channels and in your inboxes.

Is this new and enhanced Blueprint replacing the current version?

Yes. The new and enhanced Blueprint offers the full package, whereas the current Blueprint only offers the first step (self-assessment). So, we are introducing this improved version to enhance your professional journey. The new Blueprint provides a self-assessment tool, CPD resources, CPD record and the IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment.

I’ve already taken the self-assessment in Blueprint; will my results be transferred across to the new version of Blueprint?

No, your old self-assessment will not be transferred across. This is because the new and enhanced Blueprint self-assessment tool is aligned to the competency framework, which means that you need to retake the assessment to ensure you’re assessing against the most up-to-date competencies.

I see you are introducing an IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment. What does this involve and why is it only mandatory for Chartered Members and Chartered Fellows?

Ethical practice is extremely important for all OSH professionals in ensuring public trust and upholding the reputation of the profession. We are making this mandatory for our Chartered Members and Chartered Fellows, as we expect them to lead the profession by demonstrating the highest standards of professional conduct at work and in their dealings with the public. But we would encourage all members to take the assessment.

Why do you feel the need to introduce an IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment when ethics are already covered in the Code of Conduct?

The IOSH Code of Conduct commits members to the IOSH vision for a world of work that is safe, healthy and sustainable. It provides an ethical foundation for members working towards this vision. The IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH Assessment, which is supported by e-learning, will provide members with up-to-date and relevant content on ethical considerations that affect organisations and the OSH profession in the widest sense.

Will I have to pay for the IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment?

No, the IOSH Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and Assessment will be free of charge as part of our CPD package. This can also be counted towards your CPD.
