Aviation and Aerospace Group - letter from the Chair

May 2022

Dear Fellow Committee Members

I am extremely proud to be next in line to Chair for the IOSH Aviation and Aerospace Group. I am fully committed to building on the legacy of both Rick and Hannah Smith (before him).

On that note, I would like to sincerely thank Rick and Martin for the incredible job that they have done over the past 2 years and in extremely difficult circumstances. Their achievements include increasing the committee; having the first ‘open’ session with our members; Creating a strategy and undertaking a member wide survey. I recognise the time and effort that they have put in and this work will provide strong foundations for us to build on. It is very much appreciated.

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to your new Vice - Chair, Louise Kelly. Louise has been a colleague of mine since joining Birmingham airport in March 2019. She is highly organised, efficient, and extremely knowledgeable with over 30 years in the industry - a pleasure to work with. Together, through our ‘Safety Culture Excellence’ Programme, we have made significant progress including achieving ISO 45001 certification.

I am a strong believer that success is achieved through having a strategy with SMART objectives with clear roles and responsibilities, but above all working with people who are fully committed and enthused.

As the world awakens after COVID the aerospace and aviation sector now face new challenges including those around recruitment, the evolving impact of green technology and climate change and the wellbeing and mental health crises. More than ever members will now be looking to us for our support and guidance. I passionately believe that the opportunity here is for us to come together and make a real difference.

My first meeting as Chair will take place on Tuesday 21st June, please find the agenda attached. Please may I ask that you keep your video on during the meeting. Seeing all of the participants really helps cue people into others’ reactions and will make the meeting more engaging for everyone involved.

Additionally, Louise and I are currently reviewing the objectives for the year, these will be circulated for your thoughts and comments nearer the time.

We are also working with the IOSH Relationship Manager, Alison Nicolson, to recruit new committee members and again I will keep you fully updated with progress.

I look forward to seeing you all very soon but in the meantime should you have any points you would like to raise I would love to hear from you Via the Networks Admin team – Networks@iosh.com

Thank you again for your continued support.

Regards

Simon
