Caribbean Branch at AMCHAM HSSE Conference and Exhibition 2018

The 22nd annual AMCHAM HSSE Conference and Exhibition was held on the 24 and 25 of October 2018 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Trinidad. The theme for this year was “Technology, Culture, Results”. The aim of the event was to promote HSSE excellence, information sharing, the use of best practice and to elevate national HSSE awareness.

The IOSH Caribbean Branch occupied booth number 30 within the exhibition area. The AMCHAM HSSE Conference and Exhibition is regarded as the premier HSSE event in the region and as such it presents a great opportunity to showcase and promote the branch.

The exhibition area was abuzz with activity and a constant stream of visitors. The Executive Committee members volunteering at the booth had two busy days promoting the work of IOSH, the benefits of membership and our upcoming one-day safety and health conference to be held on 20 November 2018. The booth offered a wide range of information including booklets on the role of IOSH, membership categories, the process for joining IOSH, the new student membership category, IOSH Work 2022 and the No Time to Lose campaign.

At the booth, special emphasis was placed on promoting the IOSH Caribbean Safety and Health conference. Many persons expressed interest in attending the conference and several attendees signed up for membership. The team provided details about the speakers and topics of interest that would be covered, encouraging them to save the date and register!

The AMCHAM conference featured over 40 local and international speakers. A plethora of interesting and informative sessions were offered, including but not limited to, Human Factors and Incident Investigations, Misuse of Permit to Work Systems, Cyber Security and Safety Leadership. There were also a number of lively flash sessions on topics such as Energy Management, Process Safety, Industrial Hygiene and Management of Chronic Illness.

Persons visiting the IOSH booth were encouraged to enter a competition where a draw was made for a book prize – Ergonomics in Action. Apart from conference delegates, the exhibition area was also open to the public, giving the team the advantage of reaching a wider number of persons. Visitors to the booth included professionals from a variety of fields such as health and safety, engineering and business management. Students were also present from several local schools, creating an opportunity to educate them on the profession and the role of IOSH in promoting health and safety at work.
