Our shared values

Uniting the OSH profession

Activate 2028 is all about collective commitment and action. So, we’ve created a set of values to inspire and unite the occupational safety and health (OSH) profession.

Act with integrity – we stay true to our beliefs, our dedication to workers’ safety and our commitment to continuously champion workers’ safety and health.

Always be inclusive – we champion a world of work where everyone can be their authentic self and are utterly committed to protecting the right for everyone to feel safe and empowered in the world of work.

Together we innovate – we empower organisations to face an ever-changing and pressurised world through collaboration and communication. We’re committed to developing successful solutions that are dynamic and innovative.

Foundation for action

These guiding principles give us a foundation from which to take action and evolve the world of work for the better.

They’re about being supportive, collaborative and enabling – and below are some of the ways IOSH can help members demonstrate the highest standards and be role models for these values.

IOSH’s competency framework is designed to help OSH professionals build capacity and keep pace with today’s constantly evolving workplace. It includes 69 competencies across three categories – technical, core and behavioural.

Members can benchmark themselves against the competencies using the self-assessment tool in Blueprint – IOSH’s all-in-one career and self-development package. It includes an Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and assessment, as ethical practice is extremely important in ensuring public trust and upholding the reputation of our profession.

We are also implementing new member grades later in 2023, to fully support members’ journeys and ensure their grade reflects their level of professional competence.
