Patient safety: infection prevention and control

Public Services Community

Date

Type
Webinar

Join our Public Services Community for a webinar focused on infection prevention and control, sometimes known as IPC.

Infection prevention and control includes the policies, practices and procedures to prevent and reduce the spread of infections, primarily within healthcare settings.

It represents practical, evidence-based strategies aimed at safeguarding both patients and healthcare workers from the risks associated with avoidable infections.

To mitigate against infections, we use standard infection control precautions (SICPs). These must be implemented by everyone across all care environments, consistently for every patient, regardless of whether an infection is identified or not.

This practice is essential to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors within the healthcare setting. Effective IPC is essential for maintaining high quality healthcare and ensuring patient safety at all times.

The webinar discussion will cover:

  • guidelines and policies featuring recommendations and standard definitions tailored to specific facilities
  • hand hygiene practices
  • surveillance of surgical site infections
  • monitoring of gram-negative bacteraemia
  • antimicrobial stewardship and addressing antimicrobial resistance
  • national surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAI)
  • multidisciplinary team work with antimicrobial pharmacist and microbiologist
  • auditing
  • training and supporting IPC champions.

This event is open to IOSH members and non-members.
