IOSH Academy – Level 6 Diploma course details
Study with us for a degree-level qualification in occupational safety and health
The three units of the IOSH Level 6 Diploma combine to give a balanced professional qualification that prepares you to play an effective role in your organisation.
There are three units of study, each mapped to the IOSH competency framework.
- Advanced OSH management principles in organisations.
- OSH integration within an organisation.
- Leading and influencing in OSH.
You study part-time for the Diploma, completing it in two years using our online learning platform. Online learning is a smart and inexpensive way to study, meaning you are not tied to a single location.
Successful completion of the Diploma meets the academic requirements for you to upgrade to IOSH Certified membership. Once you have upgraded, you can add the post-nominal CertIOSH to your name, recognised by employers around the world.
Student membership
If you're not already an IOSH member, we’ll set you up as a Student Member as part of your application. Student membership costs £15 per year.
We provide a structured programme of learning that includes:
- an induction
- modules with reflective tasks and exercises that test your learning
- physical text books to support your online learning
- timetabled live workshop sessions.
Our tutors are on hand to provide additional one-to-one support by email, phone or Microsoft Teams meeting.
There are no formal exams. You are assessed by recorded presentations and written reports. You have several weeks to complete each assessment, working with an assigned assessor who provides tailored feedback and support.

Application and enrolment
After we receive your application form, there are a few steps before you can start the course:
- our team reviews your CV and qualifications to confirm you’re eligible
- we make you an offer
- you pay for the course
- we set you up as an IOSH Student Member and start your course enrolment
- you receive your text book in the post.

Start the course
There are regular start dates throughout the year. Once enrolment is complete, we’ll confirm your start date.

Unit 1 e-learning
16 weeks
This unit has eight modules of e-learning on advanced occupational safety and health management principles in organisations. You learn about different approaches to workplace safety, including:
- legal frameworks around the world
- risk management and incident management
- integration of safety and health risk processes.
You take part in three live sessions:
- an induction on your start date (two hours)
- a workshop at the mid-point of the unit (three-and-a-half hours)
- an assessment tutorial at the end of the unit (two hours).

Unit 1 assessment
12 weeks
Your unit 1 assessment is a series of reports and presentations on a real-life safety management system.
You’ll submit your reports after six weeks. There is then a chance for feedback before you re-submit the final reports.

Unit 2 e-learning
28 weeks
This unit has 13 modules of e-learning on occupational safety and health integration within an organisation. You’ll learn about:
- organisation-wide approach to occupational safety and health
- contribution of safety and health at each stage of producing a product or service
- implications for workplace safety and health of external factors and organisational change
- how occupational safety and health in an organisation contributes to sustainability.
You’ll take part in two live sessions:
- a workshop at the mid-point of the unit (three-and-a-half hours)
- a one-to-one knowledge check with your tutor towards the end of this unit.

Unit 3 e-learning
14 weeks
This unit has seven modules of e-learning on leading and influencing in occupational safety and health. You’ll learn about:
- behaviour and performance
- supporting others to get results
- developing an organisation-wide approach to safety and health
- reviewing your own performance and identifying how you can develop.
You’ll take part in two live sessions:
- a workshop at the mid-point of the unit (three-and-a-half hours)
- an assessment tutorial (two hours).

Unit 2 and 3 assessment period
18 weeks
Unit 2 and 3 are assessed together. You produce:
- a written occupational safety and health strategy proposal for a real-life scenario
- a presentation of your strategy proposal
- a reflective report.
There is a chance to get tutor feedback on your strategy proposal before the final deadline and presentation.

Final results and graduation
Final grades are confirmed and you’re awarded your diploma.
