What is Chartered membership?

CMIOSH stands for Chartered Member of IOSH. It shows you meet professional standards in occupational safety and health that are recognised internationally.

Chartered membership is for experienced professionals with at least three years in senior roles. You’ll need to demonstrate professional competence and hold relevant qualifications.

When you achieve Chartered status, you can use the CMIOSH post-nominal letters and join an elite community committed to the highest standards.

How much does it cost?

Chartered membership represents a significant professional investment. We believe in transparent pricing so you can make an informed decision.

Job role

To apply for Chartered membership, you must meet these requirements.

  1. You must be an Affiliate, Technical or Certified member.

  2. You’ll need to show evidence of strategic responsibility, advising leadership and leading organisation-wide initiatives.

  3. Demonstrated across technical knowledge, strategic thinking, leadership, ethics and continuing professional development (CPD).

    Next, choose your route based on your qualifications and experience.

  • Take the Professional Development Assessment (PDA) route.

  • Use the experiential route if you have five years senior-level experience without a degree-level health and safety qualification.

    You need to be at least an Affiliate member to apply for Chartered status. If you’re not yet a member, you can join IOSH and then apply for Chartered status once you meet the requirements.

    While most Chartered Members hold a degree-level qualification, we recognise that extensive professional experience can be equivalent. If you have significant senior-level experience without formal qualifications (at UK level 6 or equivalent), contact our Professional Standards team to discuss your situation.
