Living through PTSD
From reality to resilience

Summary
Behind every visible workplace incident, there can also be an invisible injury. One that continues long after the moment itself has passed.
In part two of this series, we move beyond recognising PTSD and step into the lived reality of trauma and recovery. We look at the lasting impact it can have on a person’s life, work and identity.
This webinar is moderated by Tracey Dangerfield, Director of SkillBase First Aid, alongside IOSH President Richard Bate. A powerful and deeply personal discussion features David Donnelly, Chair of the IOSH Northern Ireland Community, sharing his experience of developing PTSD.
Through David’s story, we’ll explore how trauma affects people and how organisations, leaders and occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals can create safer, more supportive workplaces. You’ll better understand the difference between everyday stress and trauma-related responses, while highlighting the realities people continue to face long after a traumatic event.
David will reflect on:
- the moment that triggered the trauma and how life changed afterwards
- the confusion, fear, isolation and symptoms that followed
- the impact PTSD had on work, relationships and identity
- the highs, lows and moments that felt impossibly to navigate
- the stigma, misunderstanding and challenges encountered along the way
- the turning point towards recovery and the ongoing risk of relapse.
This is not a clinical discussion, it is a human one. PTSD is disruptive, challenging and very real.
Through honest conversation and lived experience, this session offers a rare opportunity to deepen your understanding. It will challenge assumptions and reflect on how workplaces can better support people affected by trauma.
