Summary
Rapid advances in technology are transforming how work is carried out and managed. This shift brings new possibilities, evolving risks and a growing need for OSH professionals to expand their capabilities to protect people at work.
Technical occupational safety and health (OSH) knowledge remains fundamental, but professionals must now understand how data is collected, interpreted and used to support organisational decision‑making. Working confidently with digital tools, judging AI‑generated insights and communicating data‑driven recommendations is becoming a critical competency for today’s OSH profession.
Part four of our 12-part ‘Raising the bar for OSH’ series explores how the OSH competency landscape is evolving in response to rapid technological change. Hosted by IOSH President Richard Bate, he welcomes:
- Bridget Leathley, a Human Factors Consultant and founder of The Safer Choice
- Ashok Garlapati, Ambassador for the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and HSE Consultant with Kuwait Oil Company
- Dr Aissam Bouadjel, Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality with Fujairah Oil Industry Zone.
Our panel will explore the digital, data and AI‑related skills becoming increasingly important for OSH practitioners, drawing on international perspectives and sector examples.
We will discuss how organisations, professional bodies and educators are responding to these changes and supporting global workforce upskilling and future readiness.
Join us as we explore competence in a digital environment, examine emerging technologies and outline practical steps OSH professionals can take to build future‑ready skills.
