BSI tools for live working committee
Play a key role in shaping industry standards and advancing workplace safety across the UK
IOSH is seeking an experienced member with expertise in tools for live working to represent us on the BSI (British Standards Institution) National Technical Committee (PEL/78).
You can help shape important standards and influence IOSH’s policy work. This role also expands your professional network and supports your ongoing development. It lets you contribute to better health and safety outcomes across workplaces in the UK.

IOSH members, ideally CMIOSH or CFIOSH, that satisfy the role profile person requirements.

Essential
You’ll need:
- knowledge and experience in the subject matter of the committee – tools for live working
- communication and influencing skills
- ability to work towards a shared goal
- ability to work with others to build consensus
- computer literacy: emailing, online collaboration, joining online meetings, use of word processing and spreadsheet software

Desirable
A bonus but not essential:
- some knowledge of the role of standard setting and purpose of standards
- previous experience working as part of a committee of volunteers
Term length
BSI sets no fixed term limits for committee members. Membership is reviewed regularly to ensure the committee remains effective. You may leave a committee at any time if you choose. Stepping down does not stop you from applying to re‑join the same committee later. You can also apply to join a different committee in the future.
Estimated time and effort
The PEL/78 Committee meets four times each year. Much of the work can be done online through the BSI document system and by e‑mail. This approach helps members fit committee tasks around other commitments.
Meetings usually run on weekdays between 09:00 and 17:00. Some committees may agree to meet slightly outside these hours if members prefer.
What will your involvement be?
You’ll be expected to:
- actively contribute to the work of your committee(s), maintaining regular engagement (including attendance, communication of absences and participation in discussions)
- complete agreed actions and contribute between meetings within reasonable, pre-agreed timeframes
- work collaboratively with committee members to support constructive dialogue and build consensus
- share your expertise, knowledge and experience to inform and strengthen committee outputs
- understand and comply with BSI’s intellectual property (IP) policies
- support a diverse, inclusive and sustainable committee by reviewing membership, respecting all voices and helping recruit new members
- register with BSI document systems and complete relevant training as required (online or in-person)
- maintain effective links with IOSH, including keeping IOSH informed, reporting on committee activity and engaging with briefings
- attend meetings as required, either virtually (for example: MS Teams, WebEx, Zoom) or in person within the UK.

Shortlist and interview
We invite shortlisted applicants for a video conference interview. The interview panel consists of two members of the Policy and Public Affairs Team.
