Join a national group tackling construction ill health

Your chance to bring frontline health and safety expertise into UK policy discussions

We are looking for a forward-thinking member to represent us on the Health and Safety Executive’s Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC), Tackling Ill Health sub-group.

This sub-group works to reduce occupational ill health across the construction workforce. Its focus is on smaller businesses – those working at tier 2 and tier 3 level – where the risks are often greatest and resources most stretched.

As our representative, you will bring occupational safety and health expertise into national conversations about protecting construction workers. Your input will directly influence how the industry tackles ill health and supports its workforce.

What’s in it for you?

This is a genuine opportunity to shape national policy and practice. You will:

  • contribute health and safety expertise at the highest level of industry discussion
  • raise IOSH’s profile within the construction sector
  • build connections with senior stakeholders across government, industry and the health and safety profession
  • gain valuable professional development and broaden your experience of policy and public affairs.

The sub-group meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 16:00. Meetings are online and typically last around an hour.

You will also need a small amount of time between meetings to review papers and prepare your input. This is usually no more than an hour per meeting.

Who can apply?

The role is open to IOSH members, ideally with CMIOSH or above, with the relevant experience and knowledge.

No Chartered status? We'll still consider you if you have extensive knowledge and experience in your field. Affiliate and Student Members are not eligible to apply.

    • Confidence communicating in multi-stakeholder settings.
    • A collaborative approach and commitment to IOSH values.
  • As our representative on this committee, you will:

    • Attend meetings and contribute to discussions on managing occupational health risk in construction.
    • Share insight on how new processes, materials, working methods and digital systems may affect occupational health.
    • Review papers, draft outputs and provide evidence-based feedback on the implications for worker safety.
    • Highlight emerging risks and opportunities for IOSH and the profession.

You’ll also be expected to promote our policy positions and feed back on discussions and opportunities.
