Represent IOSH in construction safety discussions
Help support small construction businesses and influence health and safety discussions across the sector
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking member to act as an External Representative on the HSE Construction Industry Advisory Network (CONIAC) – Supporting Small Employers Subgroup.
The Supporting Small Employers (SSE) subgroup focuses on reaching, supporting and influencing small clients, contractors, builders and tradespeople to improve health, safety and wellbeing. It provides quick and easy-to-navigate resources to help small businesses understand and reduce health and safety risks in construction.
As our representative, you will bring occupational safety and health expertise into national discussions. You’ll help address innovation challenges and emerging risks. Your insight will help shape safe and practical approaches to new ways of working.

Time commitment
The sub-group meets monthly, usually on the first Tuesday at 4pm. Smaller groups for specific projects meet in addition to this. Meetings typically last around an hour. They are held online and during office hours (Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00).
You will also need a small amount of time between meetings to review papers and prepare your input. This is usually no more than an hour per meeting.
Who can apply?
IOSH members, ideally CMIOSH or above, that satisfy the role profile person requirements.
No Chartered status? We'll still consider you if you have extensive knowledge and experience in your field. Affiliate and Student Members are not eligible to apply.

Skills and experience
You’ll need:
- Strong occupational safety and health knowledge in construction or another high-risk sector
- Knowledge of small businesses and how they operate
- Understanding of UK health and safety legislation and emerging industry trends
- Ability to assess new technologies from a risk perspective
- Confidence communicating in multi-stakeholder settings
- A collaborative approach and commitment to IOSH values.

Key responsibilities
As our representative on this committee, you will:
- Attend meetings and contribute to discussions on new risks and technologies
- Share insight on new processes, materials and digital systems relevant to small businesses
- Review papers, draft outputs and provide evidence-based feedback
- Highlight emerging risks and opportunities for IOSH and the profession
- Share relevant IOSH perspectives, research, and good practice
- Report back to IOSH’s Policy and Public Affairs team with concise updates, key issues and recommendations from each meeting.
You’ll also be expected to promote our policy positions and feed back to us about discussions and opportunities.

Interview
Likely to take place in early September.
Shortlisted applicants will join a video interview with two members of our Policy and Public Affairs team.

The successful candidate will attend their first sub-group meeting (06 October or 03 November).
