Several IOSH volunteers have received Presidential awards over the last few months in recognition of their dedicated service and work for the Institution and for the occupational safety and health profession more widely. The Awards reflect the many ways in which members act in support of our vision of creating a safe and healthy world of work.
Presentations were made for some of these awards by IOSH President Kelly Nicoll during the Anticipate expo in London this month. Others had already received their awards at one of our Celebrating Volunteers Events earlier in the year. We run these events in conjunction with major trade shows or expos, in different parts of the UK.
IOSH’s Branches and Groups all rely on volunteer committees, as does the Future Leaders community. Other committee roles include IOSH’s Board of Trustees, Presidential team, Benevolent Fund and the Board of IOSH Services Ltd. Members can also represent IOSH externally in national and international committees.
But it’s not only about committee work. Many members over the years have taken positions on IOSH Council, which represents members’ views to the Board of Trustees and nominates members to the Presidential team.
Others give their time as mentors, passing on their knowledge and experience to other members. Members have also given generously of their time as members of peer review interview panels and in advising IOSH on the research proposals it receives.
The Awards give recognition to the outstanding work of specific individuals. But they also offer an opportunity to give thanks to all the voluntary contributions made by IOSH members to serve their organisation.
Award recipients
Keith Lyall was awarded a President’s Distinguished Service Award, for outstanding commitment in managing two groups in West of Scotland Branch that provide support for members progressing to Chartered and Chartered Fellow grades. In the years he has been running these groups, 45 West of Scotland members have attained CMIOSH status, and seven CFIOSH.
The following are recipients of a President’s Commendation Award.

- Nathan Baker – for service as a co-optee to Council

Do you know of an IOSH member who you think deserves to be given public recognition for the voluntary work they have done for IOSH directly or for our wider community? Why not nominate them for a President’s Commendation Award? If they’ve made an outstanding contribution and impact, you can nominate them for a President’s Distinguished Service Award.
All IOSH members can apply for volunteer roles. You can support our work and promote our vision of a safer and healthier world of work. Volunteer work also counts towards your continuing professional development.
