Last week saw the first-ever health and safety delegation to The Grange from China. A group from the China Academy of Safety Science and Technology (CASST) came to IOSH headquarters to learn more about fire safety and public safety from our Public Services Group and Sports Grounds and Events Group.

Professors of Engineering Sun Qingyun and Xi Xuejun, and Engineer Sheng Yong, heard a presentation by Claire Thompson, Chair of IOSH’s Public Services Group. She spoke about high-rise fire prevention, public safety risk assessment and electric vehicle parking.

Heather Fitsell, Chair of the IOSH Sports Grounds and Events Group, presented on accident prevention in public areas, safety standards for rides in cities, as well as electric vehicle parking. IOSH Relationship and Engagement Manager Katie Bevan was on hand to introduce the visitors to IOSH qualifications and how they support a professional career in occupational safety and health.

Unique opportunity

Claire Thompson was keen to pass on the learning that has developed since the Grenfell tragedy in June 2017.

“This was a unique opportunity to engage with our peers in China,” said Claire.

“The sharing of ideas, information, experience and knowledge is a great way to help improve health and safety and to have the tiniest bit of impact in China is just amazing.” Claire said she looked forward to a growing relationship between IOSH and CASST.

Alignment

The visit was facilitated by IOSH Chartered Member Sandy Lu, Managing Director of West Yorkshire-based Horizon Risk Consultancy Ltd. As a Chinese-speaking health and safety professional based in Huddersfield, CASST had asked Sandy if she could help it connect with leading health and safety bodies in the UK.

“I was aware of CASST’s leading role in supporting health and safety in China through research, policy advisory and technical services, and industry collaboration,” explained Sandy.

“Given its alignment with IOSH’s mission to promote high standards of health and safety, I could see the value of building a meaningful connection between them and IOSH to foster international collaboration,” she added.

“These engagements can only strengthen international co-operation in safety and health, fostering the exchange of knowledge, research and best practice. IOSH plays a crucial role in shaping global standards and this kind of collaboration will help to advance workplace safety on a broader scale.”

IOSH Strategic Engagement Manager Marcel Le Roux, who hosted the meeting, said: “I was struck by the delegation’s eagerness to learn from us and how our IOSH volunteers and industry group Chairs were able to answer all their detailed questions.

“It was clear to me that they are keen to use the knowledge they have gained to improve the safety and health of workers in China,” he added.
