The UK Government has published its AI Opportunities Action Plan, setting out how it plans to lead the way in shaping the future with artificial intelligence (AI).
Ruth Wilkinson, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at IOSH, said: “AI holds immense potential to make work safer, healthier and more efficient by preventing people from undertaking hazardous work and high-risk activities, facilitating informed decision-making and learning, and improving job quality and productivity.
“For this reason, IOSH is pleased to see the Government plans for boosting investment in AI opportunities across the UK with the ultimate goal of achieving economic growth, prosperity and social good.
“This is a time for the UK to be bold by prioritising good work, robust governance structures, policies and standards, the protection of rights, and ensuring trust and ethical practices.
“We are concerned that many regulators will not have the resources or ability to provide the oversight and guidance necessary to ensure public and worker confidence, and to ensure the adequate design, planning, consultation and implementation of health and safety in new and emerging technology, as this transition takes place.
“We will therefore be contacting the Government to request they fully consider the impact AI developments can have on workers. As we hurtle ever faster into the fourth industrial revolution we cannot jeopardise people's safety, health and wellbeing. Lives and livelihoods are at stake.“
