Learning from international best practice with IOSH

Supporting the next generation, the IOSH Student Member Bursary is helping turn ambition into progress

Over the past six years, it has awarded over £63,000 to over 290 members, including more than 70 bursaries in 2024/25 alone.

For Anthony Osei-Owusu Ansah, a student on the MSc Health, Safety and Environment Management programme at the University of Birmingham, the bursary comes at a pivotal point in his journey – one shaped by a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and a determination to address occupational health challenges in Ghana.

“I have come to understand that proper environmental management and occupational health and safety policies can go a long way in curbing the problems of occupational health in most mining and industrial firms.”

Finding a path into health and safety

Reflecting on his motivation, Anthony explains: “Over the years, I have witnessed several incidents of occupational death, injuries and accidents in mining and industrial settings in my country, Ghana.” These experiences, particularly within artisanal and small-scale mining communities, highlighted the need for stronger systems and more effective protections for workers.

He adds:” I have come to understand that proper environmental management and occupational health and safety policies can go a long way in curbing the problems of occupational health in most mining and industrial firms.”

Developing knowledge and skills

Anthony’s academic journey began with a degree in natural resources management, where he developed a foundation in environmental governance and policy. He later pursued postgraduate study in occupational health and safety in Ghana, gaining insight into the role of planning, awareness and policy development in improving workplace health outcomes.

Now studying in the UK, he is focused on expanding his understanding of global standards and approaches.

“While my previous studies have given me foundational knowledge in environmental policies and occupational health, I require further training and research strategies in global occupational and environmental health directives.”

A key driver for Anthony is the opportunity to learn from international best practice and apply this knowledge in an African context. “Joining IOSH has given me exposure to how organisations outside Africa identify risks and comply with regulations,” he explains, adding that this insight will help him contribute more effectively to organisational strategies in Ghana.

He is particularly keen to strengthen his practical skills in key areas of his profession. “I hope to be more resourceful in workplace hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation interventions,” he says, emphasising his focus on applying knowledge in real-world settings.

For Anthony, the bursary represents an opportunity not only for personal development, but also to create wider impact.

“This experience will be shared with my workplace counterparts upon my return to Ghana.”

Looking ahead, Anthony is committed to building a career that bridges environmental management and occupational health on an international scale. His long-term ambition is to provide expert consultancy support to organisations and governments implementing health, safety and environmental initiatives into policy and practice.
