Making the grade

Why Hassan is passionate about progression and protecting people

Hassan Raza is already making his mark on the safety and health profession aged 22. His journey has taken him from curious learner to Certified Member, powered by his commitment to professional development. Next stop – Chartered.

Hassan was just 19 when he developed a passion for safety and health. It started with a colleague, whose storytelling brought the profession to life.

“He shared real-life stories of protecting people in the field in such a fun and engaging way,” said Hassan. “It made me want to work in a profession that challenges my natural abilities.”

This early inspiration meant that Hassan was already on-site, learning the job, at an age when many people are still figuring out their path.

“It wasn’t always easy – people often questioned my ability due to my age or limited field experience. But I was determined to make my mark, not by knowing everything right away, but by learning every single day.”

Building foundations

Hassan’s first step was to enrol on IOSH Managing Safely®. He said: “That course introduced me to IOSH’s career progression, continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities and a community of professionals who support each other.”

He actively pursued CPD, building up a solid foundation in safety, health and environment (HSE) practices.

“Every certificate I earned wasn’t just a document – it was a step forward in proving that I belonged in this profession,” he said.

Building credibility

“One of the proudest moments in my career was joining IOSH. I joined as an Affiliate Member and worked my way up to Technical membership. Now I’m Certified and an active member of IOSH UAE Community.

“Each upgrade reflected not just qualifications but real-world experience and commitment to continuous improvement.

“The upgrading process was smooth and well-structured, with clear guidance and resources from IOSH. It was a positive experience.”

He makes good use of his members benefits, including his CertIOSH post-nominals. “I value IOSH’s CPD platform, webinars that expand knowledge and the opportunity to connect with global professionals to exchange ideas and experiences,” said Hassan.

Safety-first employer

Dubai-based HSE Advisor Hassan works credits his employer with playing a vital role in his development.

He said: “I want to specially highlight Datalec Precision Installations for their continued support and positive health and safety culture. As a business, we are proud to set international standards locally in the region.”

He applies everything he learns in fast-paced, high-risk environments. “Whether it’s risk assessments, toolbox talks or implementing proactive safety cultures, my role allows me to contribute to something greater than myself. That is, ensuring everyone goes home safe at the end of the day,” said Hassan.

Aiming for Chartered

Now Hassan is focused on achieving IOSH Chartered status – the natural next step in his ‘never stop learning’ approach. He is in the process of enrolling on the Professional Development Assessment (PDA) route.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I entered the field, inspired by a senior company colleague who is a Chartered health and safety director,” he said. “My employer fully supports me in this goal.

“To me, Chartered status isn’t just a title – it represents a high standard of excellence, professionalism and dedication to the field.

“Being recognised at this level would give me confidence in my own abilities, show my commitment to continuous improvement, and set a strong example for others in my profession. It would also enhance my credibility, both within my organisation and the wider industry, opening more opportunities for growth and leadership.”

Inspiring others

For Hassan, the best things about safety and health are reducing hazards and influencing and improving people’s attitudes and behaviours toward safety.

He hopes his story inspires others to choose safety and health as a career – and has advice for those who do.

“Dedicate yourself to continuous learning,” he said. “Step into the practical field to gain oversight and do not hesitate to get help and support from senior professionals.

“I also advise joining IOSH.”

As for his career ambitions, Hassan is clear. “I aim to meet every challenge in the field through practical experience and learning, achieve Chartered status, and keep developing academically,” he said.

Hassan’s journey shows that safety and health is a career for those who care deeply and aim high. Whether you're just starting out or looking to grow, IOSH can help you thrive.
