Before the movie industry’s awards season reached its Hollywood climax at the Oscars, there was one more showcase to celebrate.
This year’s graduation ceremony of the National Film and Television School (NFTS), based in the UK but known for its creative excellence across the globe, took place at Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square. The showcase, supported by BBC Studios and featuring the presentation of an IOSH Award, was the culmination of a week of screenings, presentations and industry meet and greets at the BFI Southbank.
With the work of the Class of 2026 spanning film, television, animation, documentaries, comedy, commercials and games, this year’s £1,000 IOSH Award for Health and Safety Management in Film Production went to student trio Jeanet Froidurot, Tamera Gatharu and Sorcha Kahn (pictured) for their TV entertainment collaboration on Bikini State: Zombie Apocalypse.
Challenging choice
NFTS Production Health and Safety Manager Sunny Bains, commented: “The IOSH team noted that selecting a winner is becoming increasingly challenging each year on year, as students continue to improve their approach to risk assessment across their productions.
“This is a real credit to the School and its tutors and reflects the work that is on-going to raise safety awareness across productions,” she added.
Tyrone Partridge, Vice Chair of the IOSH Thames Valley community, was at the ceremony once again to present the award: “The winning team demonstrated strong leadership in their approach to health and safety, particularly within the risk assessment process. They adopted a holistic approach and fully embraced risk assessment as an essential part of the entire production.”
Over its more than 50-year history, the NFTS has established itself as one of the most prestigious film schools in the world. Proud to have recent alumni working on such industry hits as Slow Horses, All Of Us Strangers and Sherlock, its graduates have claimed a total 15 Oscars and 165 BAFTAs.
