From technical expertise to leadership impact
How the IOSH Level 6 Diploma helped Caleb Eghobamien accelerate his career.
When Caleb began exploring qualifications to support his safety and health career, he knew he needed more than just another certificate.
A diploma that opened new opportunities
Having already completed a range of shorter courses, he wanted a qualification that would help him develop not only his technical competence, but also the leadership and management skills needed to progress into senior roles.
Today, Caleb is preparing to move into a more senior position within an engineering consultancy, working towards Chartered status and continuing his extensive volunteering activities across the profession. He credits the IOSH Level 6 Diploma with helping him develop the confidence, strategic thinking and leadership capability needed to take the next step in his career.
Looking for more than another certification
Caleb’s route into the profession was far from straight forward.
Originally trained in civil engineering, he moved to the UK in 2020 to complete a master’s degree. Through self-development, professional networking and practical experience, Caleb began building a career in occupational safety and health.
As he developed professionally, he became increasingly selective about the qualifications he invested his time and money in.

“A lot of courses are just repeating things you probably already know from a Level 2 or Level 3 course. You’re getting another certificate but not necessarily getting real value.”
For Caleb, the IOSH Level 6 Diploma stood out because it offered something different. Alongside technical knowledge, the qualification focused on leadership, management and understanding how safety decisions influence wider business performance.
“I was looking for something that combined the competency element of health and safety and the leadership element as well.”
The IOSH Level 6 Diploma stood out because it offered that balance. The qualification also aligned with his ambition to achieve Chartered status and progress into senior leadership positions earlier in his career.
He recognised that many OSH professionals develop strong technical expertise but are not always equipped with the management and leadership skills required to progress.
“The way I see my career, I know I’m ambitious. If I know I can achieve more, I want to prepare myself for that.”
Balancing study with a busy professional life
Completing a Level 6 qualification requires commitment, and Caleb was already balancing a demanding workload with an extensive range of volunteering activities.
Alongside his professional role, he volunteers with community organisations, supports young people interested in STEM careers, contributes to industry initiatives and provides health and safety support within his church.
Finding time to study was not always easy.
“There were a lot of late nights. Sometimes I’d be reading from 10pm until 1am or 2am just to stay on top of everything.”

To manage the workload, Caleb learned to prioritise.
There were periods when he reduced other commitments temporarily so he could focus on key deadlines and assessments. The course’s online learning platform also helped him track progress and stay organised.
Rather than simply aiming to complete the qualification, Caleb wanted to fully engage with the content and understand how it could be applied in practice.
That mindset proved valuable throughout the programme.
Applying learning in the real world
One of the aspects Caleb valued the most was the opportunity to use his own organisation as the basis for many of the assessments.
Rather than working through hypothetical scenarios, he was able to analyse real workplace systems, policies and processes.
This allowed him to connect academic learning directly to his day-to-day role and gain a deeper understanding of how health and safety influences wider business performance.
The qualification encouraged him to think beyond compliance and consider the strategic factors that shape organisational decision-making.

“It wasn’t just about health and safety. It was about understanding the wider business environment and how decisions affect the whole organisation.”
This approach led to one particularly significant insight.
While completing his assessments, Caleb identified a gap in the way health and safety information was managed within his organisation. Although policies and processes existed, there was no central system that allowed employees to easily access information, report issues or manage key safety activities.
As he explored the issue through his studies, he recognised the potential impact this was having on the organisation.
Months later, the business introduced a new centralised health and safety management system that addressed many of the challenges he had identified.
For Caleb, this demonstrated the practical value of the learning.
“I was able to identify a problem before a wider team of health and safety professionals and recognised there was a gap.”
The experience reinforced his confidence and highlighted how the skills developed through the qualification could create real organisational value.
Developing leadership and influence
While the technical content was important, Caleb believes some of the most significant benefits came from the leadership and communications elements of the programme.
His role requires him to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and lead conversations around risk management, design safety and project delivery.
The modules focused on leadership, communication and influencing gave him new tools and techniques that he could immediately apply in the workplace.
“A lot of the skills I developed around communication, leadership behaviour and influencing people were things I used directly in my day job.”

The result was a greater confidence in leading discussions, challenging assumptions and contributing to decision-making processes.
Combined with the technical knowledge gained through the qualification, these skills helped strengthen his professional capacity and supported his continued career progression.
Following completion of the diploma, Caleb secured a promotion and is now preparing to move into a more senior role within an engineering consultancy.
Learning from a diverse professional community
For Caleb, one of the most valuable aspects of the qualification was the opportunity to learn alongside professionals from a wide range of industries.
The cohort included people working in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, education, finance and even film production.
These discussions exposed him to different perspectives, challenges and approaches to managing health and safety.
“The community was one of the biggest benefits. You learn from people across so many different industries”.
Many of those connections gave continued beyond the qualification through professional networking and ongoing conversations.
The experience broadened Caleb’s understanding of the profession and reinforced the importance of learning from others with different experiences and backgrounds.
Looking ahead
Having completed the IOSH Level 6 Diploma, Caleb is focused on continuing his professional development and building on the momentum created by the qualification.
His immediate priority is settling into a new senior role and continuing his journey towards Chartered status.
Longer term, he hopes to progress into senior leadership positions where he can influence organisational strategy and help shape positive safety cultures.
Alongside his professional ambitions, he remains committed to volunteering, mentoring and supporting others entering the profession.
Whether through industry initiatives, community work or creating content that helps aspiring health and safety professionals navigate their careers, he is passionate about sharing knowledge and helping others succeed.
For Caleb, the diploma was not simply a qualification. It was a catalyst for professional growth, that continues to shape the direction of his career.
