Climate change and workplaces

As environmental, social and regulatory challenges continue to evolve, OSH professionals must be prepared to identify, assess and manage new and emerging workplace risks.

From extreme weather, heat stress and air quality to energy transitions, technological change, supply chain disruption and evolving sustainability expectations, the factors influencing worker safety, health and organisational resilience are becoming increasingly interconnected.

In part five of our 12-part series on ‘Raising the bar for OSH’, we will explore how these changes are influencing workplaces and what they mean for the future of OSH practice. Hosted by IOSH Head of Policy and Public Affairs Ruth Wilkinson, the session brings together international perspectives from leading voices across the profession:

Drawing on global examples and practical experience from different sectors and regions, the panel will examine how climate and sustainability challenges are amplifying existing workplace hazards while creating new and emerging risks. The session will consider how sustainability, environmental change and the future of work intersect with OSH, and how practitioners can contribute to safer, healthier and more resilient workplaces.

We will explore the skills and competencies needed to navigate this changing landscape, including climate literacy, resilience thinking, scenario planning and the ability to anticipate and respond to emerging risks. The discussion will also consider how OSH professionals can move from reactive risk management towards greater adaptability, foresight and preparedness.
