Your membership journey

How to progress through our membership grades

We want our members to be the best they can be. Your membership level reflects your experience and ongoing investment in both your career and the wider occupational safety and health (OSH) profession. Our new membership grades structure has more clearly defined entry routes, transparent progression and a new experiential route to membership.

How much does membership cost?

All new members, apart from those eligible for Student membership, join as Affiliate Members and pay £216 (including a one-off administration fee) for the first year.

Once you've joined, we'll support you in transferring to the membership category which reflects your knowledge, qualifications and experience. Please request an initial review  if you think you meet the criteria for Technical or Certified membership. There is no extra cost for this process.

If you're eligible to progress your membership through one of our assessment routes, you will need to pay the appropriate fee.

Concessionary membership and assessment fees are available to new and existing members.

We'll let you know when your membership is up for renewal. See our renewals page for details, including costs for your grade.

Ready to upgrade?

Our new membership grades include more clearly defined entry routes, more transparent progression from one grade to another and a new experiential route to Certified and Chartered membership. And you can request to upgrade your membership as soon as you've joined.

Are you qualified?

Technical membership requires a level 3 qualification. Our certificate in Occupational Safety and Health Principles and Practice provides an excellent foundation early in your career.

New progression routes

Do you have leadership experience in occupational safety and health? If you wish to progress to Certified or Chartered status without completing OSH qualifications then our new experiential route may be perfect for you. Have you been a Chartered Member for at least five years? If you also have a minimum of five years relevant OSH leadership experience, you can progress to our highest level of membership.
