A variety of challenges - and rewards

With its diverse portfolio of service areas, ranging from air conditioning to other specialist technical building services, Westway Services recognised that they needed to seriously invest in safety and health training.

In particular, this growing UK business wanted to reduce accidents, incidents and near-misses by improving employee awareness in identifying hazards and understanding associated workplace risks.

The diversity of the firm’s work created a strong need to understand the different risks associated with each discipline. That’s why Westway Services choose to have their IOSH training conducted in-house – so individual courses were tailored to specific technical challenges.

Nearly 500 employees have been trained since 2013 and accident rates have reduced significantly from 612.05 per 100,000 employees to 345.67 per 100,000 employees. RIDDOR rates have reduced from 57.87 per 100,000 employees to 32.92 per 100,000 employees.

Following encouraging feedback from colleagues, Working Safely is now part of all new starters’ inductions at its training centre – which have doubled to two days. In addition, Westway Services, now a part of ABM UK, has launched the ABM Learning Centre.

The ultimate aim for Westway Services now is zero accidents.
