Bev Messinger, Chief Executive 

Bev has been the CEO of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) since October 2016. IOSH is the world’s largest and only chartered body for safety and health professionals. She leads on the delivery of IOSH’s strategy, WORK 2022, which sets out how IOSH will work globally with businesses, stakeholders and individual members to shape the future of safety and health at work. Bev is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and is a Board Director representing IOSH on the Council for Work and Health.

Vanessa Harwood-Whitcher, Director of Professional Services

Vanessa’s role focuses on enhancing the OSH profession by setting competency standards, creating career progression opportunities and providing thought leadership. She leads our Customer Service Centre and customer experience, works closely with our global volunteer network of branches and groups and oversees all membership activities, including CPD, Chartered Membership and Fellowship. She oversees IOSH’s research programme and technical content development to provide leading practical guidance and is responsible for IOSH magazine. Vanessa came to IOSH in 2017 following senior roles in education and chartered professional bodies. She holds an MBA from Loughborough University.

Richard Orton, Director of Strategy and Business Development

Richard leads IOSH activities with policy-makers, regulators and investors and businesses globally, helping shape sustainable strategies and cultures that have the safety, health and wellbeing of people and society at their core. He is an Executive Director of IOSH Services Ltd, the trading subsidiary of the charity, a Director of the global Center for Safety and Health Sustainability (CSHS) and of the UK Occupational Safety & Health Consultants Register (OSHCR), and a Trustee of Safety4Good. Richard joined IOSH in 2014, bringing 20 years of leadership experience from the retail, distribution and third sectors. He holds an MBA, is a Member of the Institute of Directors (MIoD), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (FCIM) and a Chartered Marketer (CMkr).

Vicky Hilpert, Director of Finance and Governance

Vicky has 19 years’ experience across the commercial, public and third sectors, she is an accredited chartered management accountant who spent the early part of her career working in financial management roles and has held senior leadership roles for the past four years. Before joining IOSH, she had Board-level exposure within NHS Commissioning organisations, where she worked as both Director and Deputy Director of Finance. She has a strong focus on continuous improvement and has undertaken a number of large-scale change programmes. Her knowledge of the commercial sector comes from positions held in FTSE 100s and SMEs. Her varied knowledge of both sectors and scale of organisations enables her to design change programmes to meet the individual needs of the organisations she works within.

Jim O'Donnell, Director of Transformation and Technology

Jim has direct responsibility for information technology and systems, the Project Management Office and Estates and Facilities at IOSH. He oversees design and delivery of the enabling technologies and new ways of working needed to deliver our WORK 2022 strategy. His insights and innovations build on past roles as a consultant, Chief Information Officer for a UK university and Managing Director of Cisco Systems' award-winning presence at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Since joining IOSH at the beginning of 2017, he has applied his extensive experience in Britain, the USA and worldwide to reviewing, updating and replacing IOSH’s systems to achieve its ambitious global objectives.
