Meeting Report - 20 September 2018
The Yorkshire branch membership turned out in large numbers to Rogerthorpe Manor hotel for the September branch presentation. It was an estimated audience of about 150 members.
The presenter for the day was Gary Laird from Gary Laird Safety Associates. Gary is an ex fire safety officer with West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, ex Senior Health & Safety Advisor for Calderdale Council. He was also a past chair of IOSH Fire Risk Management Group and is still active within the group.
The opening to the presentation was a very thought provoking analysis of the fatal 1973 Summerland fire in the Isle of Man. Gary posed a number of questions for the audience to think about fire safety within their own organisations. He touched on a number of major fire which have resulted in loss of life before finally talking briefly about the Grenfell fire.
A number of common themes were highlighted, lack of adequate fire risk assessments, lack of fire wardens within organisations and the training of staff.
At the end of the very enlightening presentation, the Branch Chair, Paul Gillespie thanked Gary in the usual Yorkshire way.
