Qatar Branch

A warm welcome to the Qatar Branch network pages from the newly elected Committee for session 2018-19. My name is, Alan Crawford, and I will be Chairing the Committee for this session. This will be my eighth year in the Middle East. My first two years were in Saudi Arabia, before moving to Qatar. I have held senior safety positions in Further and Higher Education, Construction, Facilities Management and now with The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy of the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022.

We have a hard act to follow from last year’s Committee, who have increased the number of safety professionals who attend the monthly meeting to well over one hundred per month, with a growing number of the attendees becoming IOSH members.

The branch goals for this year will remain aligned with the IOSH WORK 2022 strategy of enhance, collaborate and influence safety outcomes in the world of work. We intend to build strong relationships with other organisations who share the vision of safer work places for all. Already IOSH has close relationships with Government Departments, not for profit organisations, NGO’s as well as contractors operating in the region. We seek to strengthen existing ties and explore opportunities to develop new relationships.

To help build a sustainable future for health and safety, will require development of tomorrow’s safety professionals. To this end we will engage with the various Colleges and Universities who incorporate health, safety and environmental topics as part of the curriculum. We are already supporting College of the North Atlantic Qatar (CNAQ) with their newly developed course which will hopefully see graduates gain entry at Grad IOSH.

This year will see the introduction of peer review interviews being held locally for the first time. Branch Relationship Manager, Brenton Philips, held an initial training workshop earlier this year for Chartered Members, interested in sitting on the first panels, to be held later in 2018, in Qatar. We would encourage anyone wishing to progress to Chartered status to contact us for further information on our CPD workshops and to discuss the peer review process.

Our branch meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at Radisson Blu Hotel from 7pm. We encourage you to come along, you don’t have to be an IOSH member or a safety professional, we just ask that you are passionate about improving safety conditions for workers in Qatar.

I look forward to welcoming you to our next event.
