Logistics and Retail Group - letter from the Chair

Greetings all.

The first six months of 2020 have presented a challenging time for our logistics and retail businesses. The Health and Safety Practitioners whole focus changed as the pandemic started. How quickly have we as health and safety Practitioners had to understand and manage working from home, safe systems in the workplace and in vehicles? Not just in terms of ourselves but also our colleagues and others. Mental Health and Wellbeing is now a greater challenge than perhaps we ever thought. Our IOSH Colleagues have been a huge support in helping to signpost people towards the right guidance and help.

Achieving social distancing and gaining access to hand washing as well as welfare facilities became an issue for our retail and logistics colleagues. I know that Group members have worked tirelessly to make their facilities user friendly and safe for colleagues and visitors/contractors alike. We in the Group committee have been so impressed by the cooperation of Health and Safety Practitioners across many different disciplines to achieve safe sites, safe deliveries and safe systems of work. We also recognise the support from Road Haulage Association and Freight transport Association amongst others in ensuring that welfare facilities were made available.

We have heard from Group members about shortages in PPE, sanitiser and even things like disinfectant wipes. How our members have resourcefully and practically solved those issues to keep colleagues safe has been excellent. The knowledge shared in terms of obtaining the correct products and delivering them to sites demonstrated the best of both retail and logistics.

The fact that the pandemic has, and is, affecting all parts of the Globe has allowed us to share our Logistics and Retail Health and safety knowledge via IOSH Webinar and Video Conference to a much wider audience. Our Group has played an active part in these activities and we will be launching our own Webinar Series soon.

Your Group Committee had great plans for 2020. We are now revising those plans and we will share those with you soon. Our aim being to make this Group work for the members and represent our Profession. If there is a topic/issue that you would like to see covered then please do get in touch.

Here’s to a safe remainder of 2020 and to staying safe and well in what has become the ‘new’ normal.

Thank you
Andrew Mawson
